I've also died to the UC elevators. I really don't understand why they wouldn't fix the doorway so a mounted tauren can't get onto some small crack of a ledge but not through the door, so that if he steps backwards accidentally while the elevator has already descended, then he's splat dead :) I think it’s awesome that you play with your son!

It's a slow grind, but you can first turn in wool, then silk, then mageweave (I believe) before you get stuck turn in piles and piles of runecloth. You're at the level where runecloth should start dropping soon, so save save save and when you are next in Stormwind, look for the Alliance cloth quartermaster. A combination of doing those 'dribbly nose' quests and cloth turn-ins can be quite fast. ALSO look for the seasonal quests... as many of those give "Alliance" reputation gains to all the factions. ^_^ I’ll second the cloth comment.
